This narrows it down to either a 9N or 2N. Has 3 speed with single brake on each side. How do I go to next step and identify it as one or the other ???

One way to tell is to look at the Ford badge
on the front. A 2N will have a small 2N printed
under the word "Ford".

Another thing to look for is the shape of the radius rods. 9N's have I beam cast rods.
2N's have oval rods. There was some overlap so this is not definate --just a hint.

Some folks on this board say that the 2N' had holes in the lower section
of the front doglegs and the 9N's do not.

If you can find any casting date codes on your cast iron parts they can give some idea as to when yur tractor was built.

That is the serial number of the engine.
There are no other serial numbers.
However the 9n 2n 8n engines are interchangeable.
You could check for casting codes to date your tractor.

Some differences twixt the 9N/2N and 8N

9n/2n Three speed trans Rear hubs 6 bolt wide circle Left brake on left Right brake on right.
Draft control only

8N
Four speed
Rear hubs 8 bolt small circle
Both brake pedals on right side
Has both draft and position control (look for a little lever on the right side under the seat)
