I read in earlier posts that a notch can be made in the bell housing to ease starter replacement. Can Any of you knowledgeable guys help a suffering newbie? Tried about everything else. Thanks!! - phil

Yep, at about the 2 o'clock position you can grind 1/4" or more away, makes it a heck of a lot easier to reinstall the starter. I used a rotary file on my cordless drill. Quick and easy.

Thanks rob, are we talking about notching the the starter hole or the ridge I see inside the housing opposite the flywheel? Thanks!

Sit down on the ground staring into the empty hol ein the tractor where your N starter goes. Hold your watch so that is is the middle of the opening... look over to where 2'oclock will remove about 1/4" from the opening starting just before 2 position.. and a bit after it... this will leave you with a slightly irregular eliptical hole, that wides up and to the right.

Also.. is your bendix in its full 'back' position a tthe end of the shaft? if it isn't .. you will be there a long time getting it installed.

The starter will install correctly without the widening.. but you have to hold your mouth just right, and a bunch of other variables need to be perfect..( stars lined up... seventh son of a seventh son.. etc! )
