I recently bought a 8n with a dearborn loader. It is good shape but it does not steer very good. You just about have to get your feet on the dash to turn it.I was noticing one front wheel is in line with the back tire on one side and the other is turned way in.I was wondering if that could be the problem and if all 8ns steer that bad.

Robert..... ...ya gotta remember, N's were designed BEFORE front end loaders were. Farmers are NOT dumb, they recoginized what a labor saver hydraulics could be, just took'em WW2 to get hydraulics reliable and useable. That means at best, a FEL on an N-Tractor, has some "issues".

That said ya gotts sumptin WRONG with yer frontend if'n yer front wheels don't go innna straight line. Yer 8N should have toe-inn alignment witness marks to adjust to. Your steering gearbox gears could have "jumped alignment" too. Hard to tell from long distance. I'd jack-up the frontend and play with the steering back'n'forth. Steering wheel should swing equally unless it jumped a gear tooth. And thats 'nutter' ball of wax..... ...Dell

I have been going through similar issues with our 8N. The main difference is the wheels are properly alligned on mine. I have broke down the stearing gear box twice now. The initial problem was difficult stearing to the right. Left turns fine. My initial diagnosis was a bad upper thrust bearing. Upon teardown, I noticed the bottom one was destroyed. I replaced the upper and lower thrust bearing as well as the cone bearing at the top of the shaft. This did not correct the problem. I crushed the lower thrust bearing immidiately upon the test drive turning to the right. I have since broken it down again. I am replacing the bearing and both races for the thrust bearings. The races were extremely worn and should have done it originally. The did not look bad until the were pulled out. I also had too many shims per the IT manual. I am reducing them to reduce the up down play. Hope this round fixes the problem. I will re-assemble this weekend between turkey hunting(Illinois). Hope it solves the problem. Not sure if my experience helps or not. I will try to follow up with the results next week. I need to get past this to start tearing into the hydraulic..... ...

Not all 8Ns steer that bad, only the ones with a front end loader :)
The 8N is not a big tractor and it doesn't have power steering, so a loader while workable is a lot of weight on the front wheels. I understand the offset wheels are not uncommon and most likely has something to do with the way the loader is mounted on the tractor.

A lot of people opt for a rear mounted dirt scoop instead of the loader. It is easier to mount and dismount when needed and handles better then the front loader. That is what I will be getting as soon as I scrape up the cash and find on cheap.

Thanks for the replys.I greased the whole thing including the steering box and it seemed to help.I was talking to a farmer today and he said that it should have a 1/4 inch toe in. It has about 3 inches.I will play with it and let you know what I find out.I think a little weight on the rear might help too. Thanks for the advice.
