How do you guys dispose of your used antifreeze? There don't seam to be any recycling sights around hear. I'm tempted to dump it in the drain at our local carwash. Dues most carwashes have sanitary sewer hook ups?? What about brake fluid

I have asked for years about this problem and I have never been able to get a good answer. I contacted the Departrment of Natural Resources - they didn't know. I even called the local TV station and asked them. I figured if they found out they could let everyone know. I tried the website and it says in my area there are no centers. I contacted the waste treatment plant and they told me to dump it down the drain of the house. I can't believe that is healthy to the environment.

Environmental hazards are my job. If you'll tell me the name of the state and town you live in, I'll find the place for you to go with your used antifreeze. I promise, I'll get the information to you tomorrow.

Nolan,
I bet I can find a place here in Story City Iowa, but I've yet to take the time (and thus, have yet to change the fluid) what I really want know, however, is just what do these places do with the stuff?

Federally, it is not a hazardous material. It can be depending on what it's contaminated with, but to date, it has not been classified as inherently hazardous.

So, that leaves the decision on what to do with it up to the states and lower juristictions.

Worse case, it simply gets dumped into landfills or the waters via sewage treatment. This can be exactly what the collection site does, legally.

Some of the companies do actually recycle it. As in filter the heck out of it and put it back in a bottle. The military uses this almost exclusively. You do see it marketed, but I don't know what the sales of it are.

Others take it chemically treat it, converting it into other products for additional uses, or straight disposal.

I can't get the search engine on Virginia's Department of Environmental Quality to work, and I can't find what I'm looking for by surfing their site. Nor can I get a good lead on a specific company or location. But, the guy listed above is apparently in charge of all recycling in the area of Montross, so he should know where you can go.

I also think you've got a "clean marina" program in Virginia. If so, any of the marinas under it should take used antifreeze.

This is a list of several companies in Grand Rapids that collect used antifreeze.

Link
This is the web address for your state Department of Environmental Quality, Environmental Assistance. It's got a number of links to various recycling sites for your area.

Link
This is for your local landfills. It looks like they take used anti-freeze, as well as many other chemicals, free of charge, for residents. It's got the phone numbers to call.

Rod,
Ditto on the need for more publicity. There also needs to be more flexibility. I have ten gallons of mixed motor oil and hydraulic fluid with a little water I've been trying to get rid of for two years. All (both) the local places won't take contaminated oil. I can see the auto parts place only taking stuff they can make money on. Good old Waste(d) Management has the county contract and they won't take it either.

My own personal recommendation, add it to other motor oil you turn in, and lie about the contamination.

In going through the reclamation process, the water will be driven off safely. The hydraulic fluid, if it's oil based, is simply an oil.

This all drives up the cost of reclamation and recycling, but it does get the materials gathered together and disposed of. And in a manner far superior to what many people feel forced to do; dump it down the drain, in the back yard, etc.

Brake fluid, now there's a challenge! I've never resolved that one myself. I end up mixing it into my motor oil and turning in the mix. Although I'm gradually coming to understand it's more like anitfreeze then anything else.

Thanks for all you have contributed to this board. You are a valuable resource.

Nolan,

We have a local landfill/transfer station run by a company called Waste Management. They generally seem ok but they stopped taking all "special" waste, including antifreeze, old paint, and used motor oil. I found a guy who heats a shop with used motor oil but I too have been unable to find a home for various other items. I want to do the right thing.

Thanks

Yesh, your county doesn't have a darn thing! That's not good.

Do you have septic or sewage treatment? If you have sewage treatment, you might get a recommendation to dump antifreeze down the toilet. This actually is a semi-reasonable sollution. The treatment plant can remediate the glycol (though not all do), and it dilutes the heck out of it. Much of pollution treatment consists of dilution. Storm drains are bad mostly because they don't do any dilution.

Burning waste oil for heat is real and does get done. I don't know what Maines regulations are on it. Again, that phone number should get you in touch with the government weenies that control that.

Please find a place to take it. Some animals like the taste of antifreeze since it is sweet. Of course, this will usually be the last dessert they have. Got a lube shop nearby? Texaco lube joints will take it, no problem. I have never had any business who sells or changes oil refuse to take automotive fluids, especially if I bought them at their store. By the way, I live on appx 6 acres and I am 15 miles from the city. I save the junk in coke bottles, etc, until I am heading in for other things.

STOP, don't pour it down the drain. Antifreeze is highly toxic and will cause problems with the sewage treatment plant and/or the stream that the drain empties into. Brake fluid is a highly refined oil that is bad news as well. Take it to a recycler. If you don't know of one, the store where you bought it does. Service stations have recycling plans to take care of their wastes; try them.

Remember, someone will drink that water downstream, maybe members of your family, members of this board, or me! Think about it.

I completly agree with charles. FIND a recycling place!! Some of the 'quick-lube' places take it for free. My kid runs one of these joints and takes anyones used oil, antifreeze, etc.. cuz they get $$$ when they turn it in.

Contemplating such a problem, I called the EPA and they did not know what I shouold do with it. (I know what they can do with it) They told me to ask a local dealer to see what they do with it. The dealer told me that some recycling place comes to pick it up at a cost per gallon. Of course no one knew what they do with it... Anyway, I could not get a straight answer out of anyone. Dig a hole and dump it in, I thought. They only respond to the "Politically Correct problem du jur"

According to the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, they accept used antifreeze as part of their hazardous waste collection program.

On the other hand, about five or so years ago the local newspaper reported that used antifreeze should be dumped down a drain that connected to a sewage treatment plant.

The reason used antifreeze is classified as a hazardous waste is because it can contain lead and other substances from the engine.

Wisconsin's DNR has an article on the subject at this link. An interesting point is that in some places, you're SUPPOSED to put it down the drain.

Ethyleneglycol and lead in your coffee! Yum-yum? Not what this Missouri country boy wants in his!

You're right! I'm one of those government folks! I work for Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Water Pollurion Control Program.

Don't pour it in the drain nor bury it out back. If you don't take care of it, someone else will pay the price (maybe with their life).

Use your internet links and check out what antifreeze and brake fluid can do to you when injested. Not a pretty sight nor thought (cancer scares the XXXX out of me).

That's exactly what I DID do (check the web)! The link I gave is to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Their information is that in some areas used antifreeze can be disposed of by pouring it down the drain.

You and your counterparts around the country seem to disagree on what to do with used antifreeze.

I guess it's not surprising that the rest of us can't find out what to do.
