Hello all, I need to dig about 200' of trench for electrical lines to a barn. It would be nice to get them down about 2'. I know from past posts that some have used a plow to dig trenches with the N but it is not practical for me since I'm going down an embankment and up an embankment across a road. I've checked all local rental companies with no luck, as all they offer are trenchers that hook onto skid loaders. I'm just fishing for ideas besides a pick-ax and shovel?

Soil type will depend on weather a ditch witch will work - it won't where I live, too many cobblestones. I did not listen and rented one anyway. Might as well have put my money in the hole.

I have discovered that there is a three point attachment trencher made, but don't know if anyone locally rents one yet. I can cut my trenching in half if I can get under the road directly in front of the house. I'm now exploring boring machines.

I would strongly recommend a "ditch witch" type machine. I used a HERTZ rental machine about a year ago for over the weekend and trenched about 1000 ft of various electrical and water line trenches fo my new home. I had never used one before but it was easy, efficient and the dirt can be pushed back in the hole with the same machine or an 8N with a blade. Not two pricy - I seem to rememeber about $225 for the weekend.

Have fun, Jim

I would rent a ditch witch, I did see at TSC a soil buster that would get you down about a foot or so. But if your after 2 feet a ditch witch is your best bet.

thanks Jim and Bill. I just did a search for a hertz rental near me, the nearest is 82 miles. I'm in NW Illinois if anyone knows of a place close by. I've called everyone in the phone book.
