Hydraulic lifts not lifting

Hey guys I am stumped. I am a Highschool student in an engines class. Recently I got a project from my teacher to fix the Hydraulic lift on a Ford model 9N tractor. I have disassembled the tractor twice. The first time I discovered that the control valve was missing, I installed a new valve and put the tractor back together. The lifts still do not work. Since then I have taken the pump apart and have found nothing wrong, tested for leaks and found none, and have tested the lifting arms with pneumatics and they work fine. This means that the pump is malfunctioning in some way or another. When I engage the hydraulic pump lever to open the control valve it does open the control valve. However, it almost looks as if the control valve doesn't come out far enough. The control arm that attaches to the control valve hits the back of the block before it looks like the control valve is open far enough. I am not sure if this is the problem or if I am just imagining things.

Is there some sort of adjustment to fix this? I haven't tightened bolts or the spring to specific torque settings, I have just tightened them up with an air wrench/bar. That may seem a little sloppy but I was in a hurry and that shouldn't be the reason why it isn't working. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I hope it is a quick fix.

The control valve has to be moved forward into the control valve bushing. Not out to raise the lift.

Are you sure that the spring is in place that connects between the end of the ram cylinder and the flexable center section of the control valve arms???? Has to be there.

Hmmmm... So the control valve has to be completely all the way in for the arms to lift? I did install the spring.

also a thing to check , if you have a sherman overdrive lever. the pto wont work the tractor will not move, and the hydraulics will not lift. also for those of you looking for gl-1 mineral oil, 90w NAPA has it parts #65205 for the five gallon and 65201 for the one gallon. they had to order it. but only takes two to three days.27.00$ five gallon and $7.01 for one gal hope this all helps good luck. abjahnke

Paul..... ...I know yer gonna haite this, but search the "archives" at the top of this great N-Board for "Zane" and "hydraulics". He really is the N-Hydraulics guru and he's posted GREAT hydraulics adjustment proceedure.

There's always a possiblility that yer hydraulic linkage fork is "bent" so's ya can't make yer adjustments work. Don't know, can't see that far (grin) You do have an I&T FO-4 manual, don't you?..... ....respectfully, Dell
