In order to start my 8n ford tractor. I was having it pulled and jerked it into second gear.
It locked up and now the second and reverse gear are messed up. Will I have to split the tractor both front and rear of the transmission to replace these two gears?? Is it a very big job, and really expensive. Maybe I just need to find a junk 8n and salvage the whole transmission. Thanks for any help you might be able to give me.

The second gear is the Achillies heel of the four speed Ford tractor transmission. Usually broken when bush hogging but probably can be done your way too.

Yes it is a big job. Every bolt in the transmission must be out before you can get the second gear out. The transmisson will have to be broken at both ends. Front and back.

You really need a manual to tackle this job.

Not really that expensive to fix but lots of elbow grease involved.

Sam,
Have you removed the top cover on your tranny? Even Zane will have a better shot if you could describe what you're seeing in there. "Messed up" describes a whole BUNCH of things on MY 8N. 8 ^ )

Russ in SoCal I opened up the cover on my 8n transmission and second gear has a tooth missing and many others roughed up on one side. Looks like I am going to have to tear into it. I wonder what I can get to hold that transmission up after I disconnect it on both ends. Many thanks to you and Zane Sherman for answering.
