My 8N running sluggish, almost dies at work
resistance. Some oil in the coolant, one plug
full of sludge. Have replaced plugs & ignition
points recently.
How to fix trouble, any suggestions.
Would appreciate any help!

I tuned up the ignition, points, condenser, cap, rotor, plug wires, etc. When I tried to start the tractor I had to choke it to start it and to keep it running. If I let off the choke it would die. Any Ideas?

Ford 8n. I thought I could fix it with baling wire, and do an overhaul out in the field, boy was I suprised, I just wanted to put in a set of rings, bearings, and do a valve job, well everything went well until I met a mushroom valve, now guys I thought I had seen it all, the old Ford flat head cars, remember? I didn't know I needed a 10 lb sledge hammer to knock out the guides, and break them in the process, now I am going to have to buy the all new style valve assembly, for an old worn out 8n.
I will have to take out a loan on the farm. all I need to do is mow some weeds. do goats have mushroom valves ?

Hi Phil, I would start with compression check. It sounds like you could have a bad head gasket(or worse, and a tired engine as well. Good luck...Al English

CHANGE the head gasket, torque it to the "proper" specs (the Ford Dealer says 65 pounds, but I went to 75) and she should run much better.
