I understand the sector shaft housing is rotated to adjust the play in the gears. There is a notch in the housing. What position should this notch be in for loosest clearance and what position for tightest clearance? Thanks.

To adjust the early model 8N steering sector the bolts should be removed from the pitman shaft retainer plates that have all the extra holes for adjusting. Adust the one closest to the sector rack first. Turn the retainer plate clock wise until there is no slack in the pitman shaft and then if it can not be turned to the next hole without using force you should go back to the next closest hole and reinstall the bolts. Then go to the other pitman shaft retainer and do it the same.

The notch is just a reference point. If you can turn it all the way around so the notch is aligned again then the bushings are too worn to adjust the sector and new bushings will have to be installed to ever tighten the sector completely.
