I recently rebuilt the engine on my 9N, I want to start out fresh and do all the right things to make it last and perform for a long time. Any thoughts out there on fuel?,octane?,should I use lead substitute?, and oil, detergent or non-detergent? Thanks for any advice.

Brett. With a brand new motor, I would be inclined to use synthetic oil. I haven't used it in my 9N's because they are older engines. However, I will use it if and when an overhaul is necessary. Your choice and your call. Ron

Brett..... ..yer 1939 designed low compression flathead N-Engine was designed for 70 octaine WHITE gas (no tetra-ethel lead) and 30wt non-detergent oil. Today, we have the benefits of modern petrolium technology, USE IT.

Modern EPA mandated NO-LEAD gasoline is 88+ octaine. The N-engine came with built-in hardened exhaust valve inserts, you don't need lead additives for modern gasoline, let alone the fact that they don't contain lead ennyways. (EPA ys know)

And with a NEW ENGINE, there should be NO QUESTION about using modern detergent mulit-weight oil, USE IT. I like 20-50wt oil year round in all my vehicles..... ...respectfully, Dell

Don't worry about the lead additive, and (for summer), use 15-40 or 20-50 detergent oil.
