1947 8N. I'm in process of changing cam gear. I have already ordered a new gear and cover gasket. Now I'm looking at this thing tore apart and cannot figure out how I'm going to line up the new gear with the crank gear. I see a dot on old cam gear but I'm not seeing any kind of marking on crank gear. Am I missing something simple here???

Just wanted to thank you guys for responses. I found a buddy with a manual which showed position keyway should be in to line up with mark on cam gear. A little cleaning up in that area revealed timing mark! Very hard to see without some intense light. Anyway, got her back together fired her up and she ran great for about 10 seconds..... Scratched head for about 10 minutes wondering what I did wrong, then remembered shutting off fuel. Whew!! Job over tractor running better than I can remember. Thanks again.. Andy

Let me clarify where I'm at. I will preface with this is my first time using computer in this fashion and first attempt at working on this tractor other than tune-up ect..bare with me please.... Removed front cover by sliding crank pulley forward just to give me enough clearance to get cover off so removing crank gear to look for markings on other side is not an option at this point. I was also hoping I would not have to remove head to look at piston/valve positions. There is a notch on front of camshaft close to one of the bolt holes for gear. Is there not a way to line it up somehow in position with key way on crankshaft. For instance does anyone know if #1 tdc is in relation to say 12 oclock keyway position on crank. Or can you just line up keyway to notch on cam. Looking for easy way out here. Thanks for all response...Andy

Andy..... ...I can tell you how to tell when your #1-piston is TDC (top dead center) without having to remove your cylinder head. (but that won't tell you iff'n its exhaust stroke or compression stroke)

Gitta length of soft solid copper housewire. Benditt into kinda a "Z" and fishitt thru yer sparkie hole. As you gently handcrank yer engine over, the piston will rize and twist yer Z. The pivioting of the Z will rise the outer leg of the Z indicating TDC. You'll haffta 'speriment some to gitt the angles and leg lengths right. But you can doitt iff'n yer clever.

I just don't remember the relationships between the crankshaft keyway and the #1 piston crank throw. And I don't remember the relationship between the crankshaft keyway and the crankshaft gear witness mark. And I don't remember the relationship between the camshaft 4-bolt gears and the camshaft except that it only fits 1-way. The only thing that I remember is "witness mark to witness mark", which should be intututively obvious. And that you slide yer camshaft gear onto the crankshaft gear..... ....Dell

Andy..... ..theres supposta be "witness" marks for camshaft/crankshaft gear alignment. Iff'n ya can't find yer crankshaft witness mark (look closer) there is always a possiblility that the crankshaft gear was installed backwards on its half-moon key. I'd at least slide the crankshaft gear off the crank nose for a lookie-look.

I'd also probably take this opportunity to install a 1-piece neoprine seal. (NAPA #550199 seal, 40x62x11, $9 cheap) inplace of the 2-piece rope seal. Do an N-Board search for info on this better seal idea from the flathead V-8 boys..... .....Dell
