A friend at work is looking at an 8N for his farmette. He wants a tractor that he can move round bales with as well as all the other chores. He has found an 8N that fits his price range. I don't think this tractor is big enough to move big bales safely. I have never tried it however so I am asking the experts. Who uses their 8N to move bales and how does it work?

We run a long bar through the middle of the bale and roll it with the 8N using a pair of chains. Not too safe but we get away with it on the great plains. Had holes drilled in each end of the bar for pins and slide some big spacers in there. We put the blade on the back of the tractor and hook on to the outside edges to get the chains spaced far enough apart. They roll ok but don't turn very tight. For real short moves or to break them out of the ice we use a chain and a bale hook. The leverage of the chain going over the bale rolls it real easy. We hook to the tractor and pull the blade right up so the chain pushing down on the blade gives a bit more traction in the snow.

Rob, a 8n with a bale spear WILL NOT move a big bale. I move big bales with a 861 with a loader on the front and bale spear on the back. And the bales weigh enough to bring the front end off the ground to where you have to steer with the brakes. I have also broken lift arms picking up big bales. John

An 8n will deffinately move a round bale.... on a bale dolley!

A bale dolley is a tag-along trailer.. it has a bale spear or a couple arm supports to hold the bale..

There are farm only setups.. and I have seen ones for behind your pickup truck to go get a round bale.

As for doing it on the 3pt.. bad idea. There have been rumors of tweaking te relief so that you can get mor ethan the oem 800# on the lift.. but even if you do get one in the air.. the first bump you hit will probably blow the seals out in the hyd top cover, pump, and piston...

Loader might lift it with a spear.. but then again.. a new problem,.. the N front axle pivots on a king pin.. and loaders are brutal on the front axle.... especially loaders with a heavy weight.. add to that no power steering.. get the picture.

The N will otherwise make a great farm chore device.. and if he can get buy with a bale dolley.. go for it.. Otherwise look for an older used ag tractor.. they are huge ( 50-100 hp ).. and go for just ove rthe prices of N's in my area..

What size round bales? If it's the bigguns, I'd forget that idea!

I had the same questuion and advice. He didn't know what size the 3 bales he bought were so he was going to check tonight. But you think an 8N would handle the smaller bales?

Rob..... ...most round bales of alfalfa are +1000#, some even got to 2000#. Good 8N's hydraulic's can lift 800# max. Gitta doodle-bug roundbale trailer, its a 2-wheel trailer witha reach over arm to sting the otherside of the bale, work great. Roundbales and 8N's DON'T DO IT..... ..Dell

Don't laugh... that actually works. I used to have some round bales delivered to my place before i had room in the barn for square bails.. I had them stacked on side so they would roll. I literally would nose them along with the tractor bumper or front tire.. steering them where I wanted them.. then knocing them over and throwing a hay ring around them... Had no other way to move them...
