Carburator trouble? with my 9N

Recently my the engine on my 9N began "racing" and using a lot of gas. I took the top off the carburator last night but didn't know what I was looking for. I notice the mechanism that runs the "flopper" in the throat of the carburator barely moves off the low stop when this happens - maybe 1/8 of an inch yet the engine raps to probably 4000. When the throttle handle on the steering column is in the idle position, the tractor idles fine. Only when I throttle up perhaps 1/3 to full power does the motor begin to race. Any ideas? I am not a mechanic so be gentle.

Hey Roger,
The governor is pretty simple INSIDE. The easiest place to mess up is OUTSIDE. Take a picture, draw a picture, use tape and/or labels on the rods and springs. Of course, best bet is to invest about $27 on an FO-4 Shop Manual. Russ

Russ: Probably my best bet is to buy a replacement governor as it seems there is oil all over the governor. Don't know whether the housing is cracked, seals are bad, just what. Thanks! Roger

Roger,
Hope ya' haven't bought the governor yet. I coulda sworn mine was spittin' oil all over until I got it off. The oil pan was leakin' and the fan was doin' a good job of spreadin' it ever'where. With the price of them gov's, I'd go with the bubblegum and balin' wire as long as possible. (Well, maybe a LITTLE more high tech, but no more than necessarily.)

I already sent off for the governor. Has to be it. Starts fine, idles fine, runs fine, just way too many rpms with the throttle pulled only 1/4 of the way open. Besides, the governor arms wiggle side to side... Thanks for the thought, though. Roger

Roger..... ...it aintcher carb, yer description is consistant with a BAD GOVERNOR. Its not rocket science but weird. Repair kit is $75 (not cheap), Rebuilt governor is $250 (definately NOT cheap).

And that throat flapper is yer choke strangler and not connected to yer governor and should be springloaded wide open except when you pull yer choke. The governor rod is connected to the throttle plate up inside the carb..... ....Dell

The throttle plate is what I so poorly tried to describe. It is connected to the governor via several (3?) pieces of linkage. That is if the governor is on the front right of the engine as you are sitting in the seat. The linkage from the throttle plate connects to an arm, with a spring attached, on the left side of the governor. Seems that arm works side to side a little and I'd bet it ain't supposed to. Roger

Hey Dell,

Sometime ago they "clocked our PA govenor going over 100 miles per hr.

The Governor said that he told his driver to fly and that people were passing us.

I guess the Keystone Copper accepted "early retirement" and the driver only got POINTS.

Later. John/PA

First.. your N engine is governed to about a max of 2200 or so rpms..Engine racing may be a combination of carb problems and governor problems. When it races.. is it 'hunting' or just full race? What does messing with the throttle linkage do, during the racing?

Observe the throttle to governor, and governor to carb linkage next time you start it up.. see what is moving on the gov'ner when you move the throttle.. then see what it in turn moves on the carb. If ther govner suddenly kicks in, and jerks the carb butterfly open.. you may have groves worn in the governor.. making for the uneven response.

Have you tried combinations of choke also and observed any effect.

Is the unit flooding out any? Any gas dripping from the carb during or after running? Make sure you shut your gas valve off after use.. if you have a bad float needle.. gas could drain out into the carb and be wasted by leaking or evaporation.. or even worse.. it could be getting into the crankcase.. Check your oil regularly.. if it is overfull.. thin and smells like gas.. well.. you know..

I'm sure you'll get other opinions as well.

good luck

Thanks to all you guys. It goes to full race with the butterfly just barely open as the control that opens and closes it is just maybe 1/8 inch off idle stop. I disconnected the linkage and operated it by hand.

The governor was the first thing I thought of but I guess I was hoping it was something simple like needing a carburator kit.
