Charging Question

Hi All My NAA is having a charging issue. When I first turn the key on the volt gauge reads right around 10 volts, it has a 8 volt battery. After I start it, it goes to about 11-12, like I think it should. After I run it for a while it goes to 0 and stays there for a while. Then it goes to -8 or so. Why does it do this?? Could it be something with the polarity?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Rob

Rob..... ...check yer chargin' gauge, bettcha it ain't voltmeter..... its an AMMETER with -30 0 +30 dial numbers.

Yes, it is normal for the chargemeter to show about +10 amps charge for about 10-15 minutes after starting up and taper off to about +5 amps charge for normal running.

Your report of tapering off to -8 amps after running is indicative of a (are you ready for this?) BAD VOLTAGE REGULATOR. And having an 8 volt battery with a 6 volt generator and a 6 volt regulator don't help matters eather.

A good voltage regulator guy can kinda force the voltage regulator and genny to output close to 8+ volts, but yer still gonnna be runnnin 'round with a semi-discharged 8 volt battery. (you need +9 volts to charge an 8 volt battery, does that surprize you?)

Somepeople have a tired engine thats hard to start so they bandaid the engine with 8 volts on the starter. I'm notta fan of 8 volt batterys 'cuz ya just can't gittem charged. Others bandaid the tired engine with a 12 volt conversion. At least you can charge that battery with a 12 volt alternator and built-in voltage regulator.

You do realize higher battery volts (8 or 12) make that 6 volt startermotor sing, and this makes a tired engine start eazier. Eventually, yer gonnna haffta byte the bullitt and rebuild the engine..... .....respectfully, Dell

Hi Dell, I was hoping you would respond. I know your not a fan of the 8v and what you say about running around with a partly charge battery makes since. But since it is working I will wait to replace the battery until it starts giving me a problem, then I will get the proper 6v for it per your recommendations. I will look for a new regulator this weekend for her. Do I have to polarize the genny again?? Instructions on how to do this again would be nice. The engine was rebuilt about 12 hours ago and she is running like new!!! Did a plug check last night, after working her pretty good and they were a nice light brown with no oil deposits. Thanks again

Cheers
Rob

Rob..... ...unless yer partsman is very good, yer gonna endup with a new 6 volt regulator. (I just don't know if theres an 8 volt regulator for the NAA genny) And I don't really know how to jimmy a 6 volt regulator to semi-charge an 8 volt battery.

And with a new rebuilt engine, there is NO REASON for an 8 volt battery starter bandaid. Your tractor, your call.

And every voltage regulator I've ever bought has come with a tiny slip of toletpaper with polarizing instructions printed on it in 6 different languages 'cept 'merricum, but who read instructions eh?..... ....Dell
