My uncle has an 8N that turns over kind of slow. He understands that a properly working 6 volt system should work fine but in cold weather there just isn't quite enough there to get it started. He went to a tractor supply store to get a new battery and he told them his problem. They convinced him to put in an eight volt battery. He now likes the way it turns over but now it registers a discharge whenever it is running. This would be because the regulator will never allow the generator to kick in. Is this quick conversion recommended or will he need to change the generator and regulator. My suggestion would probably be to go to a full 12 volt conversion or freshen up the six volt, I'd rather see the six volt stay. Just wondering what you other guys thought of the eight volt. Thanks for the help.

As stated.. a 6v genny charges the 8v battery at 7.x volts.. so you have a mostly dead 8v battery.. Assuming you have your VR tweaked, and actually get a halfway decent charge.. you are making it hard on the lights, and the coil/points.

A good 6v system even starts when cold. My guess is that if you are going to stay at 8v, find 8v lights, and get a resistor value for the coil/points. And get your vr tweaked for 8v charge. Some vintage parts houses.. and even napa can cross 8v lights... You'll find they are a tad expensive though. That said it will be easier and cheaper to move up to 12v that finagle around with 8v. Check the 6v system out first though.. just might need some freshening.. Simple stuff like a dirty vr ground contace and coroded wires.. and bad battery ground braids make for hard starts and voltage drops at the ignition. Check your resistor contacts if a front mount unit too.

Could you please explain in detail how to "tweak" the VR for the 8v conversion. Or -- what type of shop would I take it to to have this done?

Thank you so much for your help - I'm really stuck!

My Father-in-Law talked me into an 8V battery as well, and I had the same symptoms as you with the Ammeter. I discovered the voltage regulator contacts melted and my Ammeter wire was so hot the insulation started melting off the wire. I took it out, got a new voltage regulator, and put a new 6V in. Tractor has been much happier since.

Good luck,
Dan

I put an 8 volt battery in my 8n over 4 years ago, the amp gauge shows a slight charge after starting, Ive realy had no problems with it, I ran it down once ( left the lights on), used 6 volt charger, no problem . Most on this board say no 8 volt batteries cause your running around on an undercharged battery. Voltage regs can be tweeked to charge more than 6 volts, I will go back to 6 volts when the time comes .

I am really stuck. Could you please tell me how to "tweak" a VR to produce closer to 8v?
Or, where would I take it to have this done?

Thanks!
