Yesterday, it stopped while I was mowing. Started to lurch and then died. Thought it was a gas problem, but that all was fine. When I took apart the distributor cap, the coil looked "short" so I pulled on it and lengthened it. Works great now!

Why would it just lurch and stop like that in mid-mow?

Not to rain on the parade, but the time spend troubleshooting may have allowed the coil to cool down and work again. The symptoms are classic for weak coil. How long did you mow after you stretched the spring? Hope the spring adjustment works for you, but be prepared to replace the coil. Good luck. Steve 8N 169302. Who has a spare coil in the shop.

Sure could. If it wasn't making good contact, it will heat up. When things heat up, they start to move around. It's a relatively common problem.
