one more question about GL-1 90 weight oil, for the 1940 ford 9N. i Bought from N.A.P.A. 5 gallons of GL-1 gear oil. it is not an E.P. designated oil. but it is GL-1 which is what we have all talked about. the NAPA product is #65-205. is there going to be any problem with it not being a EP oil, the reason i am asking is i worry about it withstanding pressure and not being able to lift a load, or when i am using my scraping blade it will travel down because it cant take pressure like brake fluid or hydraulic oil. It seems the more answers i get , the more questions i have. i would sure appreciate any help or feed back from all of you. this is the best forum i have ever been to. there is so much to know in mechanics i dont know how they figured it all out. but anyway what is on the bucket i bought from NAPA is #65-205 ,5 Gallons, GL-1 90W gear oil,a petroleum product. Just tell me, is this the right stuff for an old but good 9N Ford Tractor. i do have some let down but it lifts very well. but i just have a trans.hydraulic fluid, that is has aprox 20 weight fluid. i think i need a thicker oil in the tractor. Just the right one. i have looked everywhere else. and when i talked to the person at NAPA he said this was the right stuff. and i specifically asked for GL-1 90 weight mineral Oil. He said this was the only Number product he had listed. thanks again for all your help in advance. especially on a question and topic that has been gone over alot. my e-mail is docsue52@hotmail.com

This is NOT the kind of "Extar Pressure" the EP refers to on the oils that have it. EP refers to extremely high loadings of hypoid gears in differentials and transmissions of road use trucks and autos where the quantity is small and the loads high, such as a couple of pints in the differental of a pickup truck or car.

Your lift will work fine, probably much better than using 134 oil.

The EP performance is achieved by the use of sulfur based compounds in the oil, thats where the horrible smell of most gear lubes comes from. Some say that the sulfur attacks certain types of bronze and brass bushings and such in tractor transmissions, but I figure its no worse than the bronze bushings in an auto tranny. possibly in 50 years or so you might see some damage. The GL-1 has none of this and is the "proper" oil for an N model, according to the engineers who designed the tractor.

GOOD STUFF.

Recently, the more info. I seek about "lubricants", the more I just want to slip away from the younger presenteers.

GL-1 is good for your tranny, hydraulics, and your rear-end (differential).

Hope this helps.
