My brakes don't work. No problem up until a couple of days ago when the wife said that she won't mow without them! I told her it stops fast enough.

Where do I start analyzing them? I have a video on order, but am anxious to do something today! I have no idea why they don't work, just that they don't!

Thanks, people!

Neighbor thought no problem with non working brakes a few year ago, one day his wife came running over, bring tractor, husband just went into pond, was gone befor I got chance to find out if he was OK. Went over and he was moving some dirt and backed to close to bank and no brakes could not stop and went in backward, when I got there he was hooking a chain on tractor to be pulled out, only thing visable was the loader, he did not have enough distance to woods to be able to pull straight out, had to come out on angle and to do that had to use 2 tractors to keep his from rolling over, he still has the tractor and don't know if he ever fixed those brakes, have not had to pull him out since.

Do you have grease and oil on the insides of your hub, by the brake cover plate? If so, your rear oil seal is leaking hydraulic fluid into your brake drum, VERY common problem with 8N's, especially pre-1950 models. Brakes don't stop well with a film of oil between the pads and drum. If your brake pedals go all the way to the floor board with no resistance - could need to adjust your brakes or replace the pads. It is an easy job to do this.

Ours didn't work worth a damn, I feared oil fouled brake shoes. When finally got around to pulling wheels and drums off, shoes were pretty good, drums rusty and rough. The drums fit on the brake lathe up at NAPA, and I cleaned shoes real good. Stops good now. Hardest part might have been getting out those screws holding drum to axle.
