Carbon Knock

My 9N recently started knocking to a point where I felt it was ready to throw a rod. I dropped the pan and checked the main and rod bearings and anything else that would give a knocking sound. All seemed well. After buttoning up the pan, the head was removed and the problem was revealed. Unbelievable, a couple of pistons had carbon deposis on top about a thick as a dime and wide a quarter. The carbon was cleaned, the head replaced and the engine purrs once again . My problem is this, my 8N is now doing the same thing. I've got great oil presure on an engine that's been babied since being rebuilt. Before I get the tools out, is there any way knowing if this engine has the same problem and it there any way of blowing out the carbon without removing the head. Thanks in advance.

You could find someone in your area with a borescope. It ia a device that will let you look in the cylinders through the spark plug holes and inspect the walls and piston crown. Some have mirror attachments so you can see the underside of the head also. It is lit also. Neat little buggers.

Ron, Ever hear the term "Blow the Carbon Out"?
Was a common problem years ago with leaded fuel and engines used in light duty. One repair was a bit of WOT, wide open throttle, operation at high engine speed. The governor may make this proceedure a little difficult but I would sure put the N to doing some hard work. I've also heard of spritzing a little bit of water into the engine while the engine is running at high rpm. I think there are commercial products available to knock out carbon. I've never had the problem.

Don't know if I would try it on these engines, but long time ago we used to dribble some automatic transmission fluid through the carb on a running engine. Smoked like Heck, but ,
