I have had this problem with my puter for quite awhile. It does not seem to bother anything except me.I have Windows ME and when I go to system tools to do a scan the scan will not go more than 33%and stops. Also it will not defragment at all.It will scan if you shut the power off then back on but it wont in the system tools..Has anyone ever run into this or know how to fix it...Thanks R.M. Easy way to do it is to reboot into "safe mode" this only loads needed programs and drivers. Boot into safe mode then go to tools and run scan disk and defrag.

The Scanning problem is likely because you cant defrag, or your hard drive is getting full. Some scanners create a temp file when you are scanning something and when it is jumping all over the place on an unfragged system it'll crash.Do a disc cleanup and get rid of junk you don't want/need. Then you need to run the scandisc from the dos prompt if you run it from windows it keeps starting and stopping because windows keeps referencing the system. After All that then you need to defrag. And remember if your hard drive is close to getting full it wont defrag either because there isn't enough room for it to sort the files....hope this helps Tim

Un, Tim,, not a good idea to run scan disk from Dos on a windows OS system. DOS does not reconize the long file names that windows uses. It is limited to 8 letter names. Windows of course well see longer file names.

Always run scan disk on a Windows OS machine from Windows!!

Make sure you turn off any screen savers or energy saver configurations too. Desktop>rt click >properties> select tab. Mine restarts too if I forget to turn these off. Steve 8N 169302

R.M. -- I don't run Windows ME Op.Sys. on any of my computers but on one of the older ones that is running Windows 98SE the problem you are describing will occur when using Scandisk if I have not first closed all operating programs etc. Once I have closed everything, even those programs that run in the background, then scandisk will run with no problems. Hope this helps -- someone that's running ME os may have a better suggestion.

Closing all running programs includes the Virus Protection program you got running in the back ground. That, more times than not, gets forgot about.

No biggie, Ctrl, Alt, Delete pushed all together will open your close program window. Just shut them down there if they are not showing as running anywhere else.
