Sort of new to this so here's a question for those more experienced. Have a 47 8n, moter has been rebuilt so it's nice and strong. I've been thinking of getting a FEL for it but in looking at some recent posts I'm unsure whether the tractor will stand up to it in the long run. So just how hard on this machine is a FEL? I'm looking at moving dirt and relatively small rocks. What about a scoop instead?

Andy...I've got a '47 8N with a wagner FEL. It's got about a 35" bucket, I love it! I don't do any heavy work with it, but I use it almost daily on my little place moving rocks, dirt, etc. I've got a Ford 3400 with a back boom & chain hoist for real heavy stuff. However today I set some railroad tie fence post into holes, & moved a couple of jeep engines. I bought it primarily for snow removal, with chains, it does the job.

I have a 52 8N with a Davis mod 100 FEL. Hard to steer, Needs counterweight. Should have calcium in the tires. It's useful, but you find yourself wondering if shoveling might be easier. Just my thoughts. Rich

Andy,
My two cents is for the scoop. I have a Ford 702 loader sitting out back but it isn't going back on the tractor anytime soon. Ditto on the hard on the front end, hard to steer, and at least with mine, it's a pain to do anything on the engine. I can't remember a post from anyone with a good quality reversible scoop just dying to hang a FEL on his or her tractor.

Andy,

I bought a rear bucket monday at an auction and I really liked it. I was using it to move pea gravel from a pile up to the house. I would like to have had a larger bucket but for the $35 I spent I can get over it. My dad had a FEL on his 8N and I had used it very little but from what I remember is with a heavy load it was hard to steer and would tend to tip forward on heavy loads. With the rear bucket you wont have that problem. You'll likely to get different answers from different people as it is what they are use too and personal choice. If i was looking I'd get the rear scoop, it wont be as hard on the front end, tires and kingpin, but that just my thoughts.

I'll defer the scoop answers to those more experienced, never played w/1.

I do have a Wagner FEL tho. N tractors aint really designed for FEL's (potential front end problems, no power steering) but they do work ok if you use common sense. Smaller bucket fulls, anticipate vs. forcing turns, wider front tires.

If you do get a FEL, use a front stinger pump that runs off the crank vs. using the N's internal hydro. pump. HTH....don t. ....

Thanks Fellas. Wife says $500 for a loader, ~100 for a scoop. Hmmmm, I think I know the way we are going here...
