just tore down my 9n (it stopped running) i thought i would rebuild it so i get it apart anf find it needs a major overhaul on the crank and then i find a large crack in the block 5 in vertical to the head then along the head line to about the center of the block. this is getting more expensive to rebuild than to buy another one in running order
the rest of the tractor is in good shape comeplete with original equipment front end loader

Rick, Is kind of a tuffcall on that engine,Dont sound like its worth fixing ,You might check around the old N boneyards in your area for a good used engine, A new rebuilt is big bucks, but if the rest of the tractor is in good shape I would say its worth it, you will get a lot more years use out of it, good luck .

I believe that everything deserves rebuilding atleast one time, out of due RESPECT for the work that , in this case, the tractor has done in its career.

The engine, if of the proper vintage, has been proven. Cast iron seasons with time. It actually will be BETTER as time goes by.

The problems that todays "mass production and marketing" present is that the cast iron that the customer purchases in a finished product, generally hasn't had the time to season. Therefore, regardless if it is a high-end reproduction or a brand new design to keep the costs down, the newer cast iron will sometimes warp, crack, or fail under too early of "fatigue".

I would recommend that you rebuild your engine. Hopefully the replacement parts will be to your expectations. If not, don't WORRY, I'm sure they will be under some sorta warranty.

Hope this helps. GOOD LUCK, John,PA

If it were mine, and I really liked it, I would rebuild it. Good used heads and blocks are not that expensive or that hard to find. There is nothing like a fine running rebuilt purring N.
