OK I pulled the top cover off, but I can't see anything wrong...(as if I would know)Can someone help me understand what should be going on.. The trans goes into R, 1st, 3rd,and 4th,but not 2nd..
I have a manual but I don't understand the power flow,so I can't figure out which shift fork(s) should be moved in what direction, because something must be stuck, I just dont know what.
Thanks for any input, Ron

Second gear is the weakest link in the four speed transmission. It is just a thin ring with gear teeth around the outside. It is possible that the gear is either split into and lying in the bottom of the transmission or that it is split and will not allow the sliding coupling to move over it.

Second gear is kind of a weak gear that gets used a lot and is the first one to go , check out the teeth, you might be going into second gear but no gear teeth left.Just my guess .

Thanks for the replys..
The shifter will not go into 2nd, so I don't think the gear has broken off.
There are no broken pieces in the bottom, but it has been that way since I got the tractor.

Zane, you said the gear may be broken and the slider wont go over it...What should I be looking for, and how can I check this with the cover off?

Thanks again, Ron

First you need to learn which fork is shifting second gear and which way it goes to do it. You can do this by moving the shifter on the top cover and determining which is which. Then you can concentrate on the second gear that is on the bottom shaft. That is the small one that will break.
