I have a 48 8N. She has been running great lately. However the lst two days I have been bushhogging my pasture. After about an hour or so she starts running rough like it trying to cut out. The tempary cure is to hold the choke almost wide open. When I get to a convienent place I will let her have a break for a 15-20 minutes and she runs fine, But when she gets good and running the cycle happens again.
thanks, redd

I have had that happen several times. Dirty screen on the Gas Tank outlet (Crud in the tank)I sure would check for fuel in the bowl when it cuts out to see if it flows good out the bottom of the carb befor I paid for and installed a new coil. That is a free couple minuite check. Mark H.

If none of the other advice helps.. check for a vacume problem.. eithe ron the gas tank due to a plugged vent.. or from a leaky carb/manifold gasket.. propane from an unlit propane torch is a great way to find a vacume leak on the carb/manifold.. and much safer than using ether.

Gas tank vent plug is also easy to check.. by cracking open the gas cap when the rough running starts..!! Warning.. don't stare down into the tank when doing this.. that gas tank is mounted right over the nice warm engine... don't want no explosions happening!!

Got any water or trash in the sediment bowl?

If none of that applies.. I'de go with the coil theory..

Redd..... .....this is classic weak sparkies syndrome, semi-fixxed by enriching yer mixture by pullin' on the choke.

There are 4 common runtime issues with N-Tractors.
1) runs fer about 1 minute and quits, bad condenser, not yer stated problem.
2) runs fer about 5 minutes and quits, clogged fuel filters, not yer stated problem.
3) runs fer about 15 minutes and quits, gunked ignition switch gutts, not yer stated problem.
4) runs fer about 60 minutes and quits or starts missin', does that sound like yer stated problem?

BAD frontmount ignition coil that overheats and melts the insulative tars and shorts out the ignition coil windings causing weak sparkies. Kinda "cures itself" by cooling off for a while like overnite.

The "fix" should be intutitively obvious, replace yer squarecan frontmount ignition coil. ..... ..respectfully, Dell the self-appointed sparkie-meister

Oh Sparkiemeister, there's one more --
runs for about 3 minutes and shuts off -- happens to me about once a month --dummy operator forgot to open the gas valve! :<)

Ok, I had exactaly the same problem. What I did to cure it was,, take the carb off, disassemble it. Take the little butter fly off the big chock flap. And I removd my chock cable as well. Mine was spung closed and chocking off the gas flow.

Wish I had pictures of it to show you, but if I was there could show you .

The other guys are going to tell you to replace this part, with such and such kit etc etc.

Easy fix really, once your realize what is going on.

Good luck with it.

I live by KISS,, Keep It Simple Stupid! :-) Keep em running!!!

Tex..... ...you obviously haven't been around N-Tractors very much, or you'd recognized the described missing problem as a runtime sparkie issue (semi-cured by choke enrichment) and the cure is NOT disableing the choke but by replacing the failed squarecan ignition coil..... ...respectfully, Dell, the self-appointed sparkie-meister

My problem was obviously different than his is/was. I was not disagreeing with you at all. I was simply stating what my problem was, and how I cured MY problem. NOT his problem.

Mine is a semi converted 12 volt, still has the 6 volt mixed in, but since it is not a work horse but rather a toy, and since it starts on the first pull, and runs like a top, I ain't going to monkey with it.

Again, I did not intend to say that what I experienced and how I cured it was the absolute fix for every engine missing issue, just what I had come across.

Who knows? Some one may actually have the same issue some day.

Yep, Im with Dell on this one, you have a bad ignition coil, replace it . front mount coils aint very " robust " . I think the cost is 30 dollars or so . Make SURE that pigtail on the new one is touching bottom ( some need streached for contact ) Tractor wont start or run worth a darn till you do .

My 9N did this. Fixed it by removing the main jet adjustment screw, blowing compressed air into it, reinstalling the screw. Has run great for 3 days now.
