I've got a 49 8N with three cyls testing 78-80 and one at 90. I've seen so much reference to 90, but don't know if that's the minimum compression rating to run good or to run at all. The tractor runs fine after a tuneup, but the compression on those three cyls doesn't hit the 90 mark. What's the bottom line. Is below 90 to be interpreted as problems on the horizon, because I can attest that less than 90 doesn't mean it runs badly.

I've had my 8N for a month, my first tractor, experienced a ton of problems, mostly minor, thankfully. I don't know what I would've done without this board. The people are great and I would hate to think what I would've paid a mechanic to solve the problems that I've found the answers to here.

Thank you all for your willingness to share information.

8Ngine,
Since everyone knows these tractors will stop dead if the compression drops to 89.9 pounds, please make a non tax deductible donation of your tractor to the above organization.
Sinserially,

90# is the lowest pressure recommended by Ford. As you surmised, that does not mean that it will not run. You will just not get the max HP out of the engine. It the tractor runs fine for what you use it for, then forgeddaboudit..

Hi 8N, Your compression readings aren't all that low. There are plenty of engines out there doing their job with less compression. If the engine runs good, doesn't foul the plugs or use too much oil, I would't take it apart. On the other hand, if it had to come apart for some other reason I wouldn't miss that opportunity to address the wear in the valves and/or cylinders. Good luck...Al English
