Hey Fellas. I am looking to get trailer brakes installed on my F150. I have a stock trailer that is about 2200 lbs. Any recommendations as to a type and what to look for. This is all new to me.

Thanks

Red Tail....I'm a little confused as to what you are wanting to do. Do you want to beef up the brakes on your truck to handle a trailer better? Or, do you want to add brakes to your trailer and adapt your truck to control them? Assuming it is the latter I would go with electric. The new ones now can be hooked right in with your brake pedal so that the vehicle and trailer act as one unit. I dont like those hydraulic surge brakes as it seems you always get resistance backing them up plus you get that bump in the butt while they are applying. Good luck ...Tim
P.S. Northern Tool Catalog has a good trailer section with hubs and brakes I've also seen Surplus Center have some electric brakes and hubs

More important than what kind is who does the work.

I just had a 2" receiver, and electric brake controler installed on my Saturn Vue. The place I took it to was a highly recomended trailer dealer in the county. They did a much better job than the place I took my Blazer to, which was an old converted service station.

BTW, most electric brake systems use a "BARGMAN" adapter for the wiring - that is the round plug.

R'tail-

You only need standard, stock (but well-working) brakes on your truck. You DO need them on the trailer though. N's weight is about 2400 pounds. Add that to your triler's 2200 and you get 4600 pounds. As long as your F-150 is in good mechanical condition and that combined weight is within your F-150's towing capacity, you are fine (with a trailer that has brakes).
