I have a 9N that raises the 3pt. hitch just fine but when I engage the PTO lever and try to lower the 3 PT. hitch it won't lower. It will lower if you let it set for a few days. Does anyone have any sugesstions?

I've checked the linkage but saw nothing unusual but I drained the oil and removed the plug and a spring came out. I believe the spring makes contact with the control value on the pump but I'm not quite sure what hold the spring to the linkage. Any ideas? It's a 9 N so the pump is different than the 8N.

You didn't say there was an implement on the 3 point. If there is no weight on the arms they may well stay up for months. I have one 9N carcas that the arms are still up after six months. There is enough resistance and probably crud in the system to hold them there. More than likely a little hand pressure pushing down on the arms will make them drop.

I've taken the inspection plate off and the linkage looks as if it functioning fine abd I've even tried adjusting the lever thinking that that was it.It doesn't matter if there is a implement on it or not.

Two things: First, your hydraulic pump is located in the belly of the rear end and is driven by the PTO shaft. Therefore, the pump can only pump when the PTO is turning. Secondly, the lift control lever bolts onto the lift cover housing. If you look closely, you will see some slots allowing for adjustment forwards and backwards. If it won't go down, I think you may need to slide it forwards some.

BEFORE you start loosening those bolts, I suggest you take off the inspection cover (dipstick cover plate) and look inside. Raise the lift up and watch the linkages inside move. Now when you lower the control lever, you should see those linkages move the other way. If they don't move the other way, several things could have happend. 1) your quadrant has slipped and is out of adjustment. 2) your control valve is sticking. Reach into the fluid and feel a "T" shaped thing with your hands and move it back and forth. Pushing it IN will let the lift go down. See if it is sticking or hanging up. 3) there is a spring that goes from the linkages to a little nub on the lift cylinder. Make sure it's still in there and hasn't fallen off. The 9N hydraulic system is deceptively simple. Let us know what you find.
