my pal is having problems with his 8n let me give a little history. new points ,plugs, plug wires, carburator, fuel valve and sediment bowl.the only way he can get it to run is to hold his hand over the air intake tube.it has a good hot spark and he has checked for air leaks around the manifold by spraying starting fluid when its running.also said he has gas flow when he takes the screw out of the bottom of the carb.would appreciate any input you gentlemen might have to offer.

I know throwing a bunch of new parts at it should help, the first thing I would do is stretch that pigtail spring on the bottom of that front mount coil, most of the time this is your problem , give it a try, wont cost nothing .My neighbor called the other day said 8n womt start and has a hot blue spark at plugs, hmm dont know, he called back later and said its running like new after I told him to stretch that pigtail to make contact.

Well... if it runs with his hand over the intake of the carb he is providing 'choke' to the system.. and lots of it.

Choke enriches the fuel air mixture. An enriched mixtue will make up for a weak spark, or a vacume leak.

Choke will also help a system with low compression. ( or one that lacks manifold vacume to pull gas past a clogged port.. etc )

If he is absolutely sure that he has good gas flow thru the carb , and NO vacume leaks ( carb halves, carb to manifold.. manifold to block. and manifold itself ( cracks ).. then he needs to do a compression test.

Let us know what he finds.
