Ignition wires burning up on my 8N

My 1952 8N-C (side distrib.) has been running fine until last week, I started it up and two minutes later smoke poured out of the battery compartment and I shut it off and found both ignition switch wires had melted on their way to the junction board. Installed a new switch. Same thing. I even installed a whole new wiring harness kit, carefully checking each wire against elec. diagram. Same thing. Both ignition switch wires melted. What to try next?

8N is running cool again. No more overheated wires. You had it right -- "mechanic error". Sometime last Fall I mistakenly misplaced the wires at the junction terminal -- both yellow wires SHOULD HAVE been on one side of the terminal with ONLY black ignition switch wire and red wire to coil on the other side. One of the yellow wires (to Voltage regulator) had "migrated" to the wrong side. A friendly mechanic at Keller's Farm Machinery in Quakertown drew me his own schematic on the back of the wiring diagram and walked me through it, one wire at a time. Meanwhile thanks to all! RM Keith.

Keith..... ...you'd be surprized at how many experienced mechanics make the same "obvious" mistakes, over and over. BTDT. Nuttin' like a pictural diagram to make schematics make sense. Yer lucky you found someone willing to share expertize with you. I'm certain you wom't make "this" mistake again. Thanks for the follow-up..... ....Dell

Bob pretty much nailed the diagnostics here.

Regulator and solenoid are a part of 2 more or less sepperate circuits... Your wireing would have to be fairly buggered up and non-oem to have those items make a difference.

My guess is a short at the wire terminal, or the first coil connection..

The 8N ignition wire story (continued). Could it be a bad junction pad? Or maybe a bad regulator? Or maybe the solenoid? I understand electrical circuits a bit, but do not know how to test for the short that could be causing this. Any tips on how to proceed, or parts to try replacing? Many thanks in advance.

If you have your wiring installed correctly, the only load on the ignition switch is the ignition coil, by way of the junction block. The solenoid and voltage regulator will NOT affect the ignition switch, if the wiring is as the factory intended.

You say your wiring is new, and the problem remains, which would seem to rule out a shorted wire. Examine the junction block closely for damage that could be causing a short, or remove the mounting screws and move it away from the metal where it is mounted, to isolate it from ground while you are testing.

The other possiblity is a badly shorted ignition coil, and the test for that is simple. Remove the wire from the coil post connected to the wire coming from the terminal block, and see if your short goes away. Then, touch the wire back to the coil post while the ignition switch is on. A heck of a spark will indicate a shorted coil.

Tried unhooking wire to coil. Still got overheating of ignition wires. Then tried same experiment with terminal block dismounted from tractor and floating free. Still got overheating of ignition wires. Any other suggestions? Maybe I could try selectively disconnecting the other wires one by one. Thanks again for your help on my problem.

You must have some very serious wire issues, if the ignition wire is overheating, and it isn't hooked to the terminal block or the coil... since that would mean that it is more or less free floating.

You have something grounded... Check to make sure the key switch isn't shorting to ground.. and then check each wire on the terminal block... one of them has to be grounded...

Did you check out the link I posted to a wiring diagram? There should be nothing powered by the switch with the coil unhooked. You must have some wires crossed somewhere!

OOOPS!

Forgot the link for the side-mount wiring diagram.

It's 6-volt. Nothing different in last year.
