Alright you experts I need your help again. My son just bought his first N tractor but the question is which one. The previous owner said it was a 9n, but the serial number is hard to make out looks like 811 118360. We know it's not an 8N like mine but is their any other way to narrow it down. Please help us out? thanks

Randy,

My guess is that your serial number of 811 118360 is really 8N 118360 which would make the engine a 48 8N. I'll bet that the first 11 is really an N. If the tractor has a 3 speed trans, its either a 9n or 2n. It is common to have a swapped engine on these old tractors.

First.. if you see an '8' as the first of the SN.. that lets you know the engine is from an 8n at least.. try some crayon on the number.. or a mirror.. even black paint and them wipe with a cloth.. that will help you pin the engine down.

As for the rest of the tractor you will have to age it buy the parts.

bottom line.. a 3spd tranny with foot pegs and brakes on either side is a 9n/2n.. a 4spd tranny, running boards and both brakes on the right side is an 8n.

I-beam radious rods make it a 9n.. etc.

Try the smiths site for identification.. www 8nford com

And/or post a pic for us.. we can nail it down pretty good.

and.. congrats on the N
