Do yourself a favor and get a factory dip stick with the little umbrella that covers the hole. I replaced two shifter boots thinking that was where the water was getting in before I figured out that leaving the tractor out in the rain with that hole open was where the infiltration was coming from. Half the price of a hydralic oil change.

Your mileage may vary

Chris..... ...the rated capacity of the combo hydraulic-tranny-diffy is 5 gals of Ford/New Holland recommended M2C-134D hydro-tranny oil. Others claim the 1939 spec: 90wt MINERAL GEAR OIL (iff'n ya can find it) is better because it doesn't leak as fast as the thiner M2C-134D worn and tired hydraulic systems.

3-drains, drain the square diffy plug first; then the 3" tranny plug; then the 3" hydro plug. 1-fill'em-up by the tranny shifter.

You can also set yer tranny oil level by pullin the bottom bolt of the 6" round dipstick plate and let everything drain out iff'n yer overfull. Overfull is NOT GOOD 'cuz it leaks out yer rearaxle trumpet seals and greezes yer brakes. (not good)

The 8 1/4" long 9N-7137-B tranny oil dipstick is only $3 (cheap)..... ....respectfully, Dell

Do you know if there is a screen or filter any where on this 9n ? the hydrolics dont respond very well, and when the tractor changes angles they seem to go up on their own.... Chris,,,,, ,

Chris..... .there are NO HYDRAULIC filters on the N-Tractor. In 1939, most automobile engine oilfilters were "optional" and yer N came standard with engine by-pass oilfilter. Yer N-Owners manual, recommend changing the 90wt hydraulic MINERAL GEAR OIL every 500 hrs or once a year. The modern Ford/New Holland recommended M2C-134D hydro-tranny oil is good for longer use time before requiring changing..... ..Dell

Thanks Again Dell
I only have one more Question. Do you know if there is any way to tighten up the steering?
I have a lot of play in the steering box(wheels want to shake badly when i try to get any speed up)....tierod ends are good..... The hydraulics were 2-1/2 gal low that would account for the eratic operation Once i filled it to the proper level the work much better.....
