Today was oil change day. No problem jug of oil new filter warmed up the '49 and drained her out. Opened the filter canister and drained the same looked down inside and it looked nasty. So I decided to pull the housing off and give it a good cleaning. I don't beleive that it had ever been off before the bottom ripple (fluted area) was filled smooth with tar caked oil. This stuff was so hard that it actually took serious scraping to remove it. Got it cleaned up finally and figured that with that much crap in the housing the lines were probably restricted also, so off they came and got a good reaming and flushing. In the process of disassembly or reassembly I pinched a brass elbow just enough so it couldn't be reused. Then a 40 mile round trip for another couldn't justify a trip just for that so the Mrs. comes along to do some shopping 4hrs. later got it back together buttoned up and fresh oil in. 45# at 3/4 throttle 4th gear and 20# warm at idle. On the Way down the road on the test run(Joyride) Came face to face with a young Amish couple comin home from services The tractor panicked their horse (a young high stepping colt) and the kid almost lost the whole rig. Moral of the story: If your gonna change your oil drain it refill it and don't look at anything.

I too recently changed the oil in my newly aquired 52 8N, the bottom of the fluted oil canister was filled with a tarlike substance that you could actually rip off and remove cleanly in pieces. I have never known oil to do that before. Like you, I wondered what possible restrictions this could be causing within the lines, but unlike you I did not remove mine to check. I put some MMO in the oil and hoped it would eventually break it down. We shall see.

Good luck,
Dan

Baloney! I'm sure you feel better knowing that crud is out of your filter cannister! And next time you change the oil you'll look down in there and see it shiny clean and you'll get a warm fuzzy feeling!

I can help you with that pinched tubing.... I did the same thing last weekend.... Go to your hardware store and get that brass fitting you need for the rplacement using 1/4 soft copper tubing.... then go to the sripng deptartment and get a spring that is 5/16 ID... it should slip easily over the tubing... now using the spring bend the tubing slowly, the spring prevents the tubing from expanding sideways thus collapsing... you may need to try it a couple of times but it does work...

don't fix it!

Broke my bush hog t-day....

Somebody did a poor job attaching the 3-pt rigging. Been patched and 'made do' a couple-few times but now it's broke clear off one side so I have no excuse to not do the repair/rebuild properly. The other side needs squared up so the top link will be right. Oh well.
