OT Case starter won't

Need electrical advice! I'm electrically challenged! I just bought a Case 580E backhoe and now it won't start. I took the Nippondenso (I think) starter out of it. It ran off a battery, But almost fried the clip leads with about ten seconds of running. Now I realise 16 gauge clip leads are not what you run a starter with, But it was test with no load so it seemed safe to do. I did a continuity with an ohm meter and it showed a constant path to ground. Not from the input side (primary?) but from the connection from the solenoid to the motor (Secondary?) Is the starter bad? Is the short in the motor or the solenoid? Can it be repaired ? Cheaply? Or must it be replaced? I bought the machine from a dealer "as is". The "as is" is not worth the paper it's printed on. The UCC code says that an object must work as it's intended. But does this apply to heavy machinery too? Thanks in advance. Rich

Rich: Don't try to change the solenoid on this baby. It's a coil inside the switch housing ( if were talking the offset gear reduction Denso either 028000-5880 or 128000-0210 ) Believe it or not, TONS of these are mis-diagnosed due to a weak ignition switch. Spend $10 on a relay to be energized by your key switch that will handle the load of the solenoid coil inside the switch housing. BTW, the coil is inside a steel frame that is PRESSED IN and STAKED once inside the switch housing. Let me know which starter it is, or more info on the Backhoe. I have access to all the Case and New Holland Service Bulletins.

Rich,
You will get a ground from the switch stud and the motor stud in the solenoid. There are 2 diffrent windings in the solenoid, and the end of one goes to ground, and the end of the other goes to the motor stud, since they both start at the switch stud you will get that reading from both posts. You will also read ground thru the starter because the negative and positve brushes are sitting on the armature.Without saying what the starter is doing it's tough to help you much more than that. Hope this helps, jstpa

Melting the leads sounds pretty normal when you try to pull a whole lot of current through 16 ga. Sounds to me, from the info you supplied, that you probably have a good starter, and a bad solenoid. Change the solenoid, they aren't very expensive....and if I'm wrong, you will have that spare solenoid you've always wanted!
Good luck.....Stan
