Well, the restoration/rebuild is complete and the 8N starts instantly, sounds great, has high oil pressure, and looks like a new tractor. In short, it's perfect except that the front oil seal leaks. I decided to use the "new-type" oil seal instead of the original-style rope seal. I took the engine to the machine shop for a complete rebuild (I provided the new seal). When I picked-up the engine, the machnist told me that he was suspicious of the new seal - he was worried that it might leak (i wish he has voiced his concerns before installing it!). Anyway, when the engine runs at higher rpms, I have a little drip. I can't bring myself to tear it all apart to make the repair just yet, but I may after some time passes. What is the procedure for replacing the front seal? I believe there was a lesson here just for me: I wanted perfection - that's hard to come by. Thanks.

Rick, When I did my engine rebuild I used the rope front seals. After a couple of hours running time I detected a leak in the front of the engine. Tear down time once again. I replaced the rope seal with the 1 piece seal & at around the same time discovered my front mount dist. was the dripping culprit. Fixed the dist. & the 1 piece front seal hasnt leaked since. If you have the front mount ya might giveer a check. HTH Jim

Rick..... ...sounds like yer machinest left out the "oil-slinger" between the engine gutts and the new 1-piece neoprine oilseal. The front oilseal DOES NOT have pressureized oil to seal against so sumptin's NOT RITE. Oil slinger is a weird sheetmetal washer p/n 40-6310-A2.

I'm gonna assume you did provide the "correct" 1-piece seal. NAPA 40x62x11 1-piece neoprene seal p/n 550199.

And while its possible that the crankshaft nose could have grooves worn into it from the old rope seal, its not too likely. And even iff'n it did, all you need to do is to "shimm" the seal to a new rubbing surface on the crankshaft. Very common to use a piece of thin cardboard cut to size to shimm out the seal so it rides on new un-grooved surface.

Complain and gitter dunn rite, you paid good moneys..... ...Dell

You have to drop the pan. This will require pulling the front assembly off and splitting the tractor aft of the engine.

I wonder about the leak at high speed only. Based on my memory of what I have read here in the past, I think there is an oil slinger up there that can be installed backwards and force oil against the seal. Not 100% sure here but I'm sure others will comment and keep us both on the right track.

Congratulations on the rest of the effort. It's something to be proud of.

Can you mike up the crank where it comes out and install a redi-sleeve on the crank to fatten up the crank?
