Hi all, I have a 52 8n that has always started and ran great but recently it sputters for about 30 seconds on startup (some black smoke) and then runs excellent aftewards. This tractor can run on one cylinder after it warms up. Here is what I have checked.
- Open fuel petcock 4 turns
- Fuel flows great from bottom of carb.
- checked points(gap) rotor and cap for moisture
- Replaced all spark plugs (H12's) and has crisp blue/white spark on each cylinder. - Connections seem to be clean and bright and tight.
- set idle/mixture to 1 turn out - set main jet 1 1/8 turn out Again this tractor runs excellent after 30 seconds of sputtering. I just cant figure out why it sputters for 30 seconds on startup. Please help and thanks to all. This is a great forum.

Are you using the choke at all during this 30 seconds of sputtering? Is your choke installed correctly so that it is spring loaded to close only when you pull it? And finally, if that doesn't solve the problem..... remove the carb drain plug and drain the bowl; then, turn the gas on, refill the bowl & see what happens. Could be moisture getting in the bowl from condensation; if it is, put some HEET (dry gas) in the fuel tank.

Using the choke only seems to make things worse. It will dump out black smoke. I may have condensation due to all of the rain we have had lately. I think I will take the carb off and thoroughly clean it and check float, filters ,jets and passages.

If using the choke makes it worse, I'm inclined to agree w/ Dell that it is a mixture problem or wrong jets rather than my initial thoughts regarding moisture in the carb. Regardless, if you're going to pull the carb, that should resolve the question.

SS..... ..yer runnin' TOO RICH, black smoke is clue. My 8N sidepointing idlemix is usually about 3/8 turn. Remember, idlemix is bassackwards, out for lean, in for enrich.

Check yer jet sizes, theys both have the same screwthread size and can be un-intentionally swapped. Mainjet is 0.073" and idlejet is 0.023". Iff'n yer ol'eyeballs can't tell sizes ennymores, try a 1/16" drillbit (0.0625") as a go/nogo gauge.

Your round fuel control valve should be engraved sumptin like "2-turns run 5 turns reserve".

Doesn't hurt to re-check yer sparkie gaps for 0.025" and yer sidemount distributor points gap for 0.025" too. You may have dirty points that need cleaning, try draggin a $1 bill between the closed points..... .....HTH, Dell the self-appointed sparkie-meister

3/8 doesnt seem very lean. Also, after the tractor warms up it doesnt seem to make much of a difference making carb adjustments. Maybe I have float problems too. I will do checks and double checks again, including points. This use to be my Grandpa's tractor and I try to always keep it in great working order. This tractor amazes me that it will run one one cylinder after it is warmed up. Does that seem right?

SS

SS..... ...every indications you've cited support swapped jets theory. As I said, check'em with 1/16" drillbit (no don't drill'em, just think go/nogo) Your quote of 1-1/8 turns on idle mixture adjust (very lean) really supports a incorrect (too biggga hole) idle jet. Should be 0.023"

And yes, a overly rich mixture at idle on a warmed up engine, will support justta 1-sparkie firing and makin' engine go round..... ....Dell, the sparkie-meister
