Ron..... ...heres yer biggest clue ONLY 8N's have 4-speed trannys and they also have side-by-side rightfoot brake pedals. 9N/2N's have 3-speed trannys and straddle brakes.

Yer descriptions of round footpegs is consistant with 9N/2N's. All 2N engines s/n start with 9N. Engine s/n's are lightly stamped on a 1x3 flatspot under the cylinderhead seam next to the lefthand oilfilter canister. Engine s/n's are listed on the leftsidebar Research and Info "serial numbers"..... ...goodluck, Dell

Brake pedals on opposite sides indicates 9N or 2N. Go to the link to learn more. If it doesn't already have it you will probably want a position control device. When the archives come back up do a search on Zane Thang (yes "Thang" is correct) to learn more.

SN on engine, above starter.

8N had 4spd tranny and position control - earlier had front mount dist, later had side mount

9N # 2N almost identical - earlier had I beam radius rods to front axle - late 9N & 2N have round radius rods.

Early 9N had non pressurized radiator and smooth rear hubs. Late 9N and 2N had riveted hubs and presurized radiator

There is no absolute defining difference between the 9N and 2N, except for the true 2N with magneto and steel wheels. The tractor built in 1943 was identical to the 1941, until the radius rods were changed to tubulat late in 1943.

I don't know exactly when the rubber steering wheel spokes and the dogleg attachment changed, but every year saw minor production changes... hardly enough to make a new model.

The one that i know of is the Ford hood badge on the 2N has a tiny 2N printed on it.
Others have said the the 2N had holes in the lower front doglegs and the 9N does not.
