I have a 49 n with cracked block. so I am looking to buy a used block. I found a used block. I haven't looked at it yet but this used block has a 3/4 oil punp in it which makes me believe it is a later model with perhaps a side distributor. The question is .. Are engine blocks interchangable ...early models to late models. side dist. to front dist. Thanks for the help. Philip

If you indeed have a 49 8N, it has a frontmount distributor; look at the new block & see if it has a frontmount distributor hole. If it is a sidemount distributor, the block will fit, but you're going to need a sidemount distributor as well as a different generator mount, as well as some other things that I can't remember right now.

Russ added so I figured I would throw in that one of them has a head with an extra drilled and tapped hole, I think the 8N side mount? I don't remember what it was for, maybe the generator mount???

Bruce and Philip,
S/N 263844 was the first side mount. The parts book says the blocks are interchangeable. Howsomever, as you say, the genny mount and distributor and front cover are different. Also the oil filter and filler moved. I'd like to hear from somebody who has tried swapping blocks and not complete engines. I'm sure I'd learn a thing or three.
