After applying some penetrating oil I finally got the dist off. The points are completely closed. No gap at all. There's also a nipple on the point (rubbing arm side) and what appears to be some scoring. Although they don't look shiny at the point of contact, I don't think I'd say they're burnt. I loosened the hold down screws, but when I turn the cam to the high lobe so that the rubbing arm hits it, the points do not open. I can force them open by pulling outward on the rubbing arm at its end opposite the breaker point, but they won't open from the pressure of the cam against the rubbing arm. It doesn't appear that the cam is making enough contact with the rubbing arm to open the points and when turning it, I can't feel much more resistance when the high lobe hits the rubbing arm than I do when the flat ones hit it. I can't get them to open using the eccentric screw either. Don't know if it's supposed to be, but it's (eccentric screw) very hard to turn. I also noticed that the metal connector on the condensor wire was touching the far end of the points where the wire comes in from the side of the dist. I'm thinking of getting new points, a new condensor and installing them before I go to a new distributor. What do you think? Could the cam be so worn that it doesn't force the rubbing arm out enough to open the points? What could have caused the points to go from being gapped properly (must have been because she was running like a top) to completely closed, no gap at all?

rubbing arm on the points should be at least an eighth inch proud of the base of the points. should be a tang--compared to a nipple

sounds like yours is missing
either broke off or set was bad from get go

I would certainly put a set of points in it before I popped for a distributor

9N part number is correct for this distributor--ford didn't change all the part numbers when the model changed. lots of "8N/ 9N" parts on a Jubille

In the past there have been posts by some of the guys about poor material being used for the "rubbing" block on the movable points arm that rides against the cam. Sounds like you got one of those sets of bad points. The "rubbing" block (cam follower) wears down at an unacceptable rate ending up where you are - can't get points to open with the cam regardless of the adjustment excentric.

Time for New points! And try to avoid getting them from the same place. :-)

I just noticed that there's a number on the dist that reads "9N12131". Don't know if that has any bearing on the problem. The tractor is a 49 8N (per serial #) with a front mount dist/coil. Thanks.
