I just bought an 8n and need to change the oil. Found how/where to drain, but golly where do i add it? when I drained it, 2 of the drains had a coffee with cream look and one had really black oil. if you only add oil in one place why the different colors? thanks.

While you're at it you might want to replace the rubber boot at the base of the gear shift. That's one possible reason why you have water in the hyd. fluid. Easy place for rain to get into.

The tractor only has one drain plug for oil, and it is in the middle of the oil pan. Thats the black oil. The milky white stuff is the hydraulic fluid that has water in it, so you might as well finish the job by opening the other two drains. One is a pipe plug under the rear end, and the other is a drain plug under the pump. Add oil to the crankcase by removing the breather cap on the left front of the engine. Add the hydraulic fluid (90w mineral oil or Ford 134D fluid) by removing the cap on top of the transmission. Before you add the hydraulic fluid, remove the bottom bolt on one of the inspection plates; add about 4 3/4 gallons of fluid until it drips out of the bolt hole; that's enough, because more will seep past your seals onto the brakes. Lastly.....you might want to buy the I&T FO-4 manual; it's about $25 and has lots of good info.

The 8N has THREE hydraulic drain plugs and ONE oil plug. The back three plugs are all hydraulic drains, and all three needs to be removed to fully drain the common hydraulic/transmission reservior. One is a small pipe plug at the very back, the other two look the same, a big hex bolt on a flat round plug, just like the oil plug up front - the one closest to the front is the oil plug. I also recommend getting the 8N Operators Manual as well as the I&T F04 manual. Both are invaluable - ESPECIALLY to a new owner.

Good luck,
Dan
