Ihave a 9 N and the 3pt hitch will not lower but raises fine. It will drop after sitting for a long time(week). I've checked the linkage and everything looks fine and is moving smoothly. I drained the gear oil and long & behold a spring fell out. The spring goes into the control value I believe but what holds the spring to the linkage? The manual isn't very descriptive on that. Any ideas and will? I have to remove bottom plate to repair?

It is possible to fix the control valve on the 9N/2N while the pump is still in the tractor if you can find all the old peices and braze them back together. It is even possible to replace the complete control valve assembly in the tractor and just leave the old parts lying where they fell. They can't do harm to the moving parts since they will be clear of them unless you turn the tractor upside down and I don't think you will do that many times.

If it is a long spring with a hook on each end, that may be your problem. If you take off one of the side inspection covers and look at the U-shaped linkage that comes from the control valve on the pump and goes up to another linkage, you'll see a curved part that has a hole in the middle of it. That's where one end goes. The other end goes through an ear with a hole in it located at the front of the lift cylinder.

If that spring is in place, then your lift quadrant may be out of adjustment. Notice that there are slots where the 4 bolts attach it to the lift cover. You can slide the quadrant forwards or backwards to adjust it. That can be done with the tractor running. I would not replace the spring with the tractor running for obvious reasons!

I took off the PTO engaging lever and looked inside and I found my problem, which is a broken control value which goes through a bracket for the linkage and the spring then goes over that to the pump. My next question is should I rebuild the pump while I have it out because I have to remove it to get the other half of the broken control out which is still in the pump?

I have a 1941 9N and I have gone through this problem..... more than likely you have something interfering with the control valve. My suggestion is drain the rearend/trans fluid, pull the pump, clean the entire rearend/pump area with diesel fuel and a scraper. Check out your pump and see if you cn move the conrol valve easily. Actual, while the pump is in your hand clean it with diesel fuel and replace the control valve and exhaust valve and be done with it. That should take care of the problem.

My 3 point was working fine yesterday until I changed the rear lube. It went up and stayed there, wont come down. Nothing came out the drain plugs but watery lube. Any ideas? Thanks Gene

Well I found the problem by removing the PTO engaging lever and found half of the contol value stuck to the side of the housing. Can I get just a control value or should I rebuild it? I'm unsure of the age of it because I bought the tractor 2 yrs ago.
