Why is my carb still leaking?

After shutting down tractor my carb continues to leak. This is what I have done.
1) Bought new float and checked for adjustment. 1/4 inch from gasket base. New and old floats were tested in hot water . No leaks. Replaced anyway.
2) Replaced needle and seat and seat gasket. 3) Cleaned carb many times. 4) Leaks only to mouth of carb. Very slow leak. Is their some way of insuring that there is no hair line cracks or bad casting somewhere. How else can gas be getting through needle and seat or getting to mouth of carb.
Regards.

I had the same problem this winter. I found that when I had adjusted the float I bent them out and they were rubbing the inside of the bowl and could not easly move up and down.

Your leak is probably at a gasket surface, but not the one everyone else has mentioned. There are two troublesome gaskets... one under the float needle valve cage, and one under the main venturi nozzle. They are usually hard red fibre. These will cause leakage while the tractor is sitting, but the gasket between the two halves won't.

These can be easily checked for leakage. Prop the bowl level and fill it with gas. Look for a leak around the nozzle after it has sat for a while.

Prop the upper half upside down and hook low pressure air to the inlet. The weight of the float will have the needle closed. Spray soapy water on the valve and cage and the bubbles (if any) will show where the leak is.

SS..... ...TOO MANY people scrunch down on the screws that hold the carb together and WARP the mating surfaces. You doubt? Put a sheet of #100 sandpaper on a glass windowpane or mirror and in figgure "8's" gently sand smooth yer carb gasket mating surfaces perfectly FLAT. Then tighten your carb #8 screws to 1 foot/pound, thats right 12 inch/ounces. Then your gasket will perfectly seal..... ..Dell

I got the same problem!!! The entire tractor restoration was easier compared to just trying to fix the carburator! I have also done and replaced everything that you've mentioned and it still leaks! I keep telling myself patience and persistence and I'll get it but I'm beginning to feel like I'm fighting a losing battle..... ...

Stumped,
T

With the new fuels that we have, they are more caustic than the old leaded stuff.... your leak may be around the gaskets as others have suggested and there may be something else loose... here is one other area which no one has mentioned... the seat to your needle valve that the float pushes up may be slightly corroded...to fix, get a 3/16 dowel (a wooden one) sharpen it to an angle of the tip of the needle valve, and by hand rotate the dowel in the seat to remove the corrosion... it works on other carburators and it cannot hurt to try it here.

Get a good wide-blade screwdriver and tighten the HECK out of the inlet valve seat.

How flat are your mating surfaces? If you take a screwdriver and GENTLY pry the little clip that the float pivots on off of the upper half (use loctite when you put the drive rivets back in), you can take the upper and lower halves and set the gasket surfaces on a piece of glass with some sandpaper/emory cloth and rub them back and forth until the surface is flat and smooth. If your gasket is leaking on the inside, it could be overflowing and running back down into the carb mouth that way. A hairline crack is not likely on something like a carb. Poor gasket mating surfaces is highly likely.
