I think I asked before about a farmall TA.I am still confused, knowing some of you have Fords and Farmalls hope some of you can explain to me.Will they still work when the TA is out. What does weak TA mean. What does TA out on upper side or weak on lower side mean.Is a TA expensive or can they be rebuilt. Im a Ford man but see lots of red tractors that have this in their add...Thanks for any help..

the Torque Amplifier on most Case/IH tractors are rebuilt in Marshfield, MO , at a company called Avatar Components. They are a sister company to Megavolt, the CNH electrical reman facility. Shoot an email to jcox at megavolt dot com and i'll put you in touch with one of the avatar guys

I slaved in an IH dealership for five years beteen 1966 and 1971. The older TAs have dry clutches and the newer ones have wet clutches that are hydraulically applied. To me they were not easy to work on since the tractor had to be broken into to get to the them. I got a pretty good education on one of them on a 706. I broke it down and replace the parts needed and put it all back together and when I tried it out. No TA shift. Does two days of work down the drain make you sick or what!? I took it back down and carefully inspected everything and found that there was a certain spline that had to be aligned so that the oil passages would apply the clutch pack to make the TA clamp down and I didn't catch it when I put it together the first time. You see I always read the manual later. Not a good idea. "Haste makes waste" my Mama used to tell me. Wish I had learned that part!

Zane, that oil passage-in-the-splines is quite a system! I did a 706 TA back in January, and darned near did what you did!

The TA on a Farmall is kinda like having a lower gear in all the gears. Yes they will work when the TA is out. Then it's just a normal transmission. Like a tractor without lower gears. I rebuilt mine on my 350. They have two clutches, the one on the front is like a car clutch and the one on the back is called, I think a sprag clutch. It's kinda like an automatic transmission. If I remember right it cost about $300.00 or so for the parts. Doing it is not real hard if you have the tools. A TA only has 'one' side and thats to lower the gears so if someone says it's weak that probably means one of it's clutches is about to go South. Could be either cluch. Most TA's go out because people upon occasion pull their tractors to start them which is a no, no while the TA is engaged.
