My brother always covered his battery posts in a good clump of grease..he said to prevent corrosion. Is this a good idea? Does it vilolate the sacred CLEAN, bright and tight rule??

Have spent years in the marine industry where sealing the terminals imperitive. Soft seal in a spray can was our favorite.

I have a 1951 Ford four door car that I bought in 1956 while in the airforce in Alexandria Louisiana. It still has the original battery cables. No corrosion has ever been on these battery cables. I have always poured a little clean new motor oil on the battery terminals every time I change the engine oil. The ground streap is still the woven type cable and I always poured a little on the webbing too.

It is still 6 volts and turns the engine over as good and fast as any 12 volt system and still has the original starter that has never been rebuilt. The car has at least 300K on it. Maybe more. Oiling the battery terminals must work!

Incognito Huh?

When these old machines were made there was no such thing as multigrade oils. Figure it out.

I use grease and/or the spray stuff and felt rings on all terminals. Makes it a lot easier to remove the clamp bolts if they ain't rusted up so bad. I have some terminals with 4 years on them with no corrosion. Lawn mower, tractor, car and truck, and atv batteries all get the same treatment in my shop.

I heard the same thing 40 years ago. I don't know if it works or not, but I just got tired of a greasy mess everytime I went to clean the posts. The battery doesn't care if the outside of the clamps get corroded; the contact is between the post and the inside of the clamp and that is what you need to keep clean, bright & tight. If you are worried about corrosion, pay $1 at Wal-Mart for those red & green felt washers.

RT,

My best friend is an aircraft mechanic for many years. He gave me two products that I swear by. The first is Misty Battery Cleaner and Protector. It is a spray foam that cleans the terminals and posts. After posts are clean, I spray them with Lynx Battery Terminal Protection Spray. This almost looks like a wine colored spray paint. I have an old boat that sits in the elements and only have to use this stuff twice per year. The felt washers are okay but can get pretty yucky over time.

Safety & blue skies,

DJ

Page 3 of the Owner's Manual states that every 30 hours "Keep (battery) terminals greased to prevent corrosion."
