Starter not disengaging from flywheel

Was having trouble getting my 1950 8n to start. Replaced the solenoid and took starter to be checked out. Now have replaced starter drive with a newer drive that is supposed to be better. Redrilled hole in armature shaft to accommodate shortened length of new drive. When I put the starter back on, it still doesn't want to start and when it does engage the flywheel, it seems not to want to disengage.

Thinking of getting a rebuilt starter and trying from scratch. Can't think of anything else to do to it. Anyone have any ideas or had similar problems?

Thanks!

Make sure the drive gear has the correct tooth spacing. Not metric or anything. Also it may be as simple as putting in a shim or two. Your drive gear may be enguaging with too much friction to disenguage. Hope to help, Eric

Have you gotten it to run yet? The new positive starter drives are NOT SUPPOSED TO disengage until the engine starts, and spins them out.

Not sure what you mean by spin them out. It's slow to start, but once it does the flywheel is still spinning and I shut it off fairly quickly. Are you saying it should continue to spin for some time after it starts?

Thanks for the help!

Are the flywheel ring gear teeth chewed up? Is the armature shaft bent? Is the shaft shiny 'eat off of it' clean? All these will contribute.

I'm not sure exactly what drive you have as there are many available.. but some of us have found units that use the oem hole.. I think tisco? makes one.

Not sure how to help with the specific problem.. but i would inspect those items i mentioned. Also.. to help disengage it for removal.. try rocking the tractor back and forth in high gear.. grab on to the rear tire.. works pretty good.

No, No and yes. Gear teeth look good. Shaft is straight. But the shaft is also quite shiny in places.

As much as I'm spending trying things here and there, looks like I should have just gotten a rebuilt one to start with.

It's still troublesome that it doesn't want to start to begin with. Then, once it finally does I have to shut the key off quick because the flywheel is still spinning.

Thanks for the response. I'm putting this all together to figure out what to do.

I may have been an error to drill another hole to accomodate a "shorter" gear. I believe you may have removed the ability for the gear to spin back up the drive and disengage from the ring-gear on the flywheel. Try reinstalling it in the original hole and see how that works.

That's an option I had considered, but the directions on the new drive were clear. The length from the bushing to the center of the hole was 5 3/4 and the directions said it should be 5 1/4 and to drill one 1/2 inch back if not.

It may be worth a try to put it back and see if that works. Otherwise I'm just going to get a rebuilt starter and go that route.

Thanks for the info!
