I'd just like to introduce myself to the group.
I've been reading through the archives, and I have a feeling I'll be spending a lot of time on these pages.
All of you knowledgable folks out there are great for offering your time and expertise to those of us who are newer to this game.

I am currently having what seems to be a common problem... runs fine with no load, but sputters and stalls five to ten minutes after I start bush hogging.
I have checked the fuel flow - it's fine, and I replaced the coil (12V). No luck. I've ordered an electrical tune up kit (new points, condenser, rotor, gaskets, plug wires). Question: is the breaker gap .015" at the most, or the least?
i.e. should the points be in contact with each other, and then break to a gap of .015",
or should they be far apart, and then move to within .015" of each other?

Thanks, in advance,
Russell

Russ, when you take the distributor off the tractor & put it on your workbench, just turn the tang on the bottom of of & watch the points open & close. The distributor cam has 4 lobes; when it gets to the high point on any lobe, the points will start to open. Keep turning until they are fully open; that's when you check the gap. I set mine at .016, because they will wear down soon enough! While you have it off....pull the little pig tail on the coil & stretch it out a bit to insure good contact.

Russel..... ..welcome..... yer 6 volt frontmount 8N 15 minute runtime is TYPICAL gunked up ignition switch contacts. For somereason, N-Ignition switches are not the most robust. New switch is $10 (cheap). I replace 3 in one summer before I got griped and bought a 25amp marine grade waterproof toggle switch. Who needs keys, eh?..... ..Dell

.015 is the gap between the points when they are "open". Hope this helps.

On a front mount distributor (early 8N and 9N/2N) the gap is .015 and the points are in contact with each other, and then break to a gap of .015.

For a side mount distributor the gap is .025 I believe.
