Yesterday I was able to teardown my '41 9N and gain access to what was causing my steering to fail - a pinion gear that had at least three of the splines worn away to almost nothing. By the way, both sector gears were fine. In the process I was making a list of what I had to order in the way of replacement parts, and I couldn't seem to locate a retainer for the steering column dust seal. In fact, I didn't even know these existed, as I never saw one and the remains of the existing dust seal weren't much to look at. Are they available anywhere, or can something be easily fabricated?

Rich..... ...yes, yer 9N steering column according to my N-Ford Master Parts Catalog (MPC) lists p/n 9N-3660, seal, steering gear dust, and 9N-3661, retainer, steering gear dust seal. The retainer has a big coil spring that sits ontop of it and held inplace by a cup.

I don't know about availability, you've got the p/n's and where I got them, and the N-Ford MPC has EXCELLENT drawings of parts assembly. ($20 cheap)..... ...Dell

Thanks everyone for the info. Dell - I have one of those Ford parts books as well, but it's at least 15 years old and I am never quite sure what parts are still available and what aren't. I have the column cap and the spring, it's just the retainer that's missing. I was hoping that someone had used a large washer or something! I keep forgetting that many parts are still available at a Ford tractor dealership. I wish Ford would issue a catalog as other non-OEM places do.
