I went out to start my tractor yesterday and it wouldn't start. it has been running fine. i have gas in the carb and spark but it won't fire. i put some starter fluid in the plug holes and that fired just fine, but if i put starter fluid in the carb it doesn't do anything. i cleaned the carb out so i know it is not clogged. could i have an air leak some were that would keep it from firing? is so, were? any other ideas? thanks for any help.

What happens when you cover the air intake of the carb and crank the engine? Is there any suction? Steve 8N I69302

Andrew,

When was the last time it ran? If it has been some time, you could have either stuck valves or stuck rings. With the up-draft carb, you have to have compression to pull the gas/air into the cylinders.

Andrew,

I still suspect compression. If you have a compression guage, do a compression test, first dry and then wet (with a spoonfull of oil in each cylinder). Minimum is 90 psi in each cylinder. If you get a large increase with the wet, you have worn rings. If your compression is OK, you could have a blocked air cleaner. Disconnect it and try opening your throttle about 2/3 and squirt starting fluid directly in the carb again not in the air cleaner.
