Another steering question

I'm in the process of rebuilding the steering gear on my '41 9N and was wondering if it's possible to install the steering gears and shaft incorrectly. I've already removed everything from the top of the tranny housing and have separated the steering assembly from the lower part. I'm worried that once I begin some serious cleaning and painting, I will forget which way the shaft and steering gears fit and inadvertantly reverse the way the shaft sits in its bearings. I wasn't thinking and forgot to make a few simple identification marks as to which was the left and which the right. I was also wondering about lubrication. What provides the lubrication for the bearings? Is it simply splash from the tranny oil underneath? Any words of wisdom will be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure if you can mistakenly install them on the wrong sides, but you should be able to tell which goes on which side by the angle of the arms, and the mesh of the gears into the shaft pinion. I don't recall if the part numbers are visible, but the right hand sector is 9N-3526 and the left is 9N-3527. And yes they are simply splashed oil, but that seems to be enough.

Yes.. it is splash lubed. Do you have an fo-4 manual.. it has a good exploded parts diagram of the 3 steering boxes the N series used. ( and no.. I don't have any experience with the innards of the 9n/2n boxes )

Thanks guys. Yes, I do have my Ford parts book and will definitely check the angle of the arms once I begin to rebuild everything. That alone should verify if everything is in the correct position.
