Will I kill myself if I buy a tractor ?

I purchased 25 acres of rural Wisconsin last year, and now feel I need a small tractor [ like a 9N or Farmall Cub ] to get some work done on it. I need to haul wood & rock and cut weeds and disc up a pasture for planting. My wife is convinced a tractor will tip over and squash me before the summer is over. Much of our land is on a hillside, so her concerns are not unfounded. How steep a hill can I plow or disc before these things will tip over ?

Hi OD, Where in Wisconsin are you? If your anywhere in the Southwest part of the state and want to see what an 8N can do send me an e-mail and maybe we can get together. Born and raised in Chicago I never drove a tractor before moving out here to my 25 a few years ago. Best of luck to you.

N tractors are great on hilly land, set the front and rear wheels out wide and they're darn near impossible to flip over.Darn near, but not completly impossible.Nothings idiot proof. I'd take an N over a cub anyday and I have had farmalls all my life.

Stay away from narrow front ends in hilly country. They tip real easy. Just my 2 cents worth.

NOT entirely true! Have you ever had any experience with a narrow front end????

I work at a power plant and a friend rolled his Caterpillar scraper off the side of the coal pile - a steep drop of about 120 feet. He had his seat belt on and the scraper had ROPS. He came away with a few nicks and a concussion from his head hitting the inside of the cab but he lived. Having said that, just be careful and drive straight down from top to bottom when cutting steep ground and do not turn unless you can complete the full turn on flat ground. Also, don't press the clutch when mowing downhill or you'll get rolling so fast you'll go out of control. GET A PTO OVERRUN CLUTCH IF YOU USE THE PTO ON YOUR N TRACTOR!!!! Doug.

I'd strongly suggest reading the operators manual cover to cover on the tractor you do buy BEFORE you try to use it, because there is alot of useful information in there on care and maintenence and saftey precautions, as well as teaches you how to properly operate the tractor. I also strongly reccomend taking a tractor saftey course, I got mine through the local AG extension service. You might also try to borrow some of the classroom videos shown to students in AG programs from your local high school or college. Most of tractor saftey is common sense stuff, like don't drive on a steep hillside sideways, go up and down instead, and trust your gut instinct, if it looks/feels too steep, then stay off it. Don't travel with your loader raised up high in the air because the tractor will roll over super easy, and take it easy over rough ground. Don't drive too close to an embankment that could give way and dump both you and the tractor over. Like somebody else has already pointed out THE TOPLINK PIN IS NOT A HITCHPOINT FOR YOUR LOG CHAIN!!!!! more people are dead for making that mistake than almost anything else. Never hook anything higher than the drawbar because the higher you hook, the more likely the tractor will roll over backwards, and believe me, a tractor can flip over faster than you could react to push in the clutch and this is clearly stated in every operators manual ever printed. Since you are in hilly country, and you said yourself that rollover is a strong possibility, maybe you sould consider buying a newer tractor that is equipped with ROPS (roll over protection sestem) and a seat belt to both keep you safer and give your wife peace of mind.
Hope this helps!

Jonathan,
Good info and backed up by Okie State University. I hate waiting for PDF files to load, although this one emphasizes what you said; especially the part about 1 1/2 seconds for a backflip!!!

Go with Ford if you're buying used. Lower center of gravity, more horsepower, 3 point hitch by the folks who invented the 3 point hitch, ROPS available. Most people do not install ROPS on Fords because they are not notorious rollers due to low CG. If your slopes are steep you can widen both front and rear wheels easily. That will help. Nice discs available, I would go with a 3 pt 6' for an N. If you get a newer Ford so much the better. More power and conveniences. Just stay away from a Select-O-Speed transmission.

Yikes.. those pictures are a bit scary, but I thought I should be plowing across the hillside to stop soil erosion.

I may have to rethink this one. I hate it when my wife is right.

Doug..... ...Would you believe that this has actually been studied? (cut and paste)

Checkout http://lamar.colostate.edu/~jhliu/topics_1.html

Don't let yer fraidy-scaredy-cat wife see them (grin)

Theses tests were done by remote radio control.

They also studied ROPS (roll over protection system) and for ROPS to work you have to be safety belted tight inside the protective bar so you can't be thrown out. So the springmounted N-ButtBuckett seat has to be thown out.

I find myself getting "very unconfortable" when mowing sidewize across a too steep slope 'cuz I start sliding outta my buttbuckett. So I mow down steep slopes so I can ride my brakes.

One of the "driving forces" for the 3-point Ferguson hydraulic lift design was to prevent the tractor from rearing-up and turning over iff'n the plow would catch on some underground obstical. It does and it won't.

That said, DON'T EVER pull ennythang from that handy-dandy 3-point top-link under yer buttbuckett. Because you will pull yer tractor over ontop of you faster than JaxSutt. And we will be offering condolances to yer grieving widdow and family members..... ....respectfully, Dell, the self-appointed SAFETY PREACHER

I've got a cub and a buncha N's. I love them both. Based on you saying you want to do discing.. I'd recommend an N...( don't get me wrong.. the cub will pull a decent disc plow.. and a single bottom plow.. or a small disc.. but I wouldn't want to disc mass acerage with one.

The N on the other hand is a plowing fool.. and that goes for lots of ground engageing things.. like disc's too.. draft control really helps.

N's stick to hillsides pretty well too. Heavy engaged implements will help too. Keep in mind that anything that feels unsafe.. probably is. Drive down or up hills.. don't try to traverse across them. use 3pt equipment as the 3rd link adds to backflip safety. Also.. if ya really want it.. there is an aftermarket rops kit certified for the N.. I doubt the cub has that.. though I can't say for certain. Cub is 11-14 hp depending on year/model.. and N is 26-27 hp with slight difference between the 9/2 and 8n. Heck.. get an NAA just one step up from the 8n.. it even has live hyds. and nearly same price range.

Congrats on the land! and DO be safe.

"Drive down or up hills.. don't try to traverse across them."

In my area if you work ground going up and down hils the neighbor down stream is going to have all your top soil. That is not alway a viable option.

It may not always be viable.. but there is a point when a tractor simply won't stick to the side of a hill. In those cases, I might think about terracing.

I have a 9N and I use it OK on my hilly land. With that said it is not the most perfect tractor for these conditions. If I was not careful I certainly could get into trouble with it. The biggest problem I see is the low end gear/speed. These tractors just don't slow down enough when going down hill. They are typically weak in the brake area too. I love my 9N but I will be buying a used 4wd tractor in the near future with a ROP device, slower low end and better brakes.

These "N's" are great tractors with plenty of life left in them. I will never get rid of this tractor but there are things it can do that can be done better and safer with a new tractor.

If you can afford it I would look for a 4wd so that you don't wind up with two tractors like me. I have honestly had times where the 9N had me a bit worried, scared if I had more sence. I don't know how steep your hills are but your wife has a good point.

Trouble for me is I just love the 9N I have and enjoy the heck out of using it. Lucky for me most of my brush hoging is on the flat part of my land.
