Without a temp gauge how do you know if the engine is running too hot? Sometimes i have light smoke or vapors coming out of the radiator cap, is this normal or do i have a problem?

The 2n I have now is the third N I have had with a seeping head gasget, this one I just tightened the head bolts and it quit losing antifreeze. It was boiling out antifreeze under a hard pull and a good torqueing fixed it for now.

I know what you are describing and you probably are running on the hot side when this happens.

How high is your coolant level? If it is higher than the top of the coils inside, it will tend to overflow when you get heated up.

Is your radiator clean inside and out? I find my 2N does this if I have just mowed the high weeds and the radiator gets covered up with weed seeds, etc.

It could be your radiator is partially plugged up inside too, have you flushed it out lately?

Finally how healthy is your water pump and is your fan belt tight?

Other things could be going on too but these are the most likely suspects I think.

Let us know what you have already done and perhaps some of the other guys will have some other ideas.

OK likely problems checked, flushed radiator and block, pressure washed fins on radiator, fan belt is tight waterpump has been removed and checked, still overheats mowing heavy grass with 5' brushmower, installed temp gauge and can watch temp climb slowly but steadily. No oil in water, no water in oil, no leaks from head or gasket. Am I asking too much from this tractor? After all its only 58 yrs old

Chemically flushing old radiators is usually a waste of time as most of the tubes are really clogged and need to be physically "rodded-out". But generally, by the time you get all yer tubes rodded, you've punched hole thru more than just a few.

The N's cooling system is generally considered to be "over-cooled" and iff'n yer really having overheating problems (and I believe you are), its really time to byte the bullett and get a NEW radiator for $150 (cheap) 'cuz having yer old radiator "re-cored" gonnna cost ya $200. Lead in the solder, EPA ya know..... ...respectfully, Dell
